Dear Weddington neighbor,

Over the past several months some of your Weddington neighbors formed an organization called the Friends of Weddington, an ad hoc grassroots citizens group. Our primary goal was to establish an opposition to the proposed private sewer plant planned for “The Woods” subdivision in Weddington. If approved, the private sewer plant would be the first of its kind in the state of North Carolina, and ultimately set precedent for other private sewer plants in our county. Due to Union County being in a crisis state with no sewer availability, Friends of Weddington realized that a private sewer plant was the wrong infrastructure for our town and only a band-aid on a serious problem that needed to be addressed by Union County’s board of Commissioners. Weddington’s Town Council scheduled a quasi-judicial public hearing to allow IB Development LLC and the opposition, Friends of Weddington, a chance to argue both sides of the issue. Due to the quasi-judicial nature of the public hearing, our group had to hire an attorney and experts to counter IB Development’s arguments. In the end the private sewer plant was denied by Weddington’s Town Council as they recognized this was against Weddington’s land use plan. While our group is very appreciative of the ruling, Friends of Weddington could have never known that Weddington’s Town Council would schedule seven nights of public hearings at a great cost to our group. Friends of Weddington held many public meetings where Weddington residents encouraged us to move forward in fighting this issue. Many Weddington residents showed up at the meetings and voted that we should hire an attorney and experts to fight this for the town. While we were prepared to fight one or two nights of public hearings at a cost of $20,000, we could have never known that Weddington’s Town Council would allow seven nights of public hearings, ultimately resulting in a $50,000 bill to our group. Friends of Weddington have been successful in raising $28,000 towards these expenses. We still owe an additional $17,000 to cover our legal, expert and court recording expenses. Over the past few months we have hand delivered fliers all over Weddington asking for contributions. We recently held a fundraiser/silent auction where we raised some money, but not enough to cover the outstanding balance. We had over 1200 signatures that supported Friends of Weddington and opposed the private sewer plant. While we had an overwhelming number of people supporting this fight, to date only 100 homes contributed money to support our group. Friends of Weddington are reaching out again to Weddington neighbors asking for your understanding as we continue our fundraising efforts. If you would like to contribute to our group, it would be greatly appreciated. Every contribution large or small helps. A contribution in the amount of $25.00 to $30.00 will go a long way in helping the “Friends of Weddington” meet our expenses and resolve our debt. We want to thank everyone who has made a contribution in the past. There are two ways you can contribute to the “Friends of Weddington” legal fund. Make checks payable to the Brough Law Firm and mail to: Friends of Weddington P.O. Box 303 13663 Providence Rd. Weddington, NC 28104

We were informed this past week, that the developer, IB Development is planning on suing the Town of Weddington for denying their CUP to build a private sewer plant in our town. This is an unfortunate turn for our town, and as citizens of this beautiful community we hope you will continue to voice your opinion. Please let the town know you thank them for their initial opposition, and hope they continue to fight to oppose the private sewer plant from being built as it could set precedent for others to follow throughout our town and Union County. You can email your mayor and town council via the addresses we have posted on our web site www.FriendsofWeddington.org or you can visit the town’s web site to obtain these email addresses.

Also, please email your Union County Commissioners to let them know they need to resolve this sewer crisis and craft an ordinance that would ban these types of private sewer plants in our County. You can obtain their email addresses at Friend’s of Weddington’s website or go to Union County’s online website.

We hope you will continue to let the town know that you do not want our infrastructure to be private sewer plants, but want the town officials to work with Union County to provide these services.

Sincerely, Friends of Weddington
