A Personal Request
January 7, 2009
Dear Weddington Friends and Neighbors,
As you know, this summer Friends of Weddington, a grassroots group was
formed with a primary goal to establish opposition to the proposed private
sewer plant planned for “The Woods” an upscale development. If approved,
the private sewer plant would be the first of its kind in the state of
North Carolina, and ultimately set precedent for other private sewer plants
in our county. Friends of Weddington realized that a private plant was the
wrong infrastructure for our town and county, and only a Band-Aid on a serious
problem that needed to be addressed by Union County’s board of Commissioners.
Western Union County needs the opportunity to have gravity sewer lines provided
by Union County Public Works.
In August, Weddington’s Town Council scheduled a quasi-judicial public
hearing to hear the developers Conditional Use Permit (CUP) request.
Ultimately Weddington’s Town Council denied the private plant and recognized
this was against Weddington’s Land Use Plan. While our group is very appreciative
of the ruling, we could have never known that Weddington’s Town Council would require
seven nights to hear this issue. Seven nights of hearings, with legal and expert
representation each night, cost the citizens group close to $50.000.00 in expenses.
The developer, IB Development is suing the Town of Weddington for denying their
CUP to build a private sewer plant in our town. The first scheduled court date is
January 12, 2009, 10:00 AM, Courtroom 6, Union County Court House. As citizens of our
town please let Weddington town officials know you appreciate their opposition, and hope
they continue to fight to oppose the private sewer plant from being built. One plant
would set precedent for others to follow throughout our town and Union County.
Friends of Weddington are reaching out one final time to Weddington and our Union
County neighbors asking for your help as we continue our fundraising efforts to pay off
our debt. While we have raised thousands of dollars to resolve our debt, and paid a
large portion of these expenses ourselves, we still owe approximately $7000.00 to our
attorney. Our attorney has agreed to wave some of the fees if we can pay this final
debt off by February 1, 2009. Every contribution, large or small helps. A contribution
in the amount of $25.00 to $100.00 will go a long way in helping the
“Friends of Weddington” meet our final expenses and resolve our debt. Any contribution
is appreciated. There are two ways you can contribute to the “Friends of Weddington” legal fund.
